Kids Everywhere 2.0

Today, my partner and I manage to continue and complete all the requirements given by the department in one single Paediatric Clinic. However, all of the requirement will not be finished without the help from Dr Ayuni and Dr Aisyah. They have managed to contact and get consent from Za'tari Syrian Refugee Camp to bring children from there to our clinic. They have booked a coaster (mini bus) that can fill almost thirty passenger at one time.

Dr Anas and I have to handle eight kids today. We have taken extra unit so that we can perform four short cases in each unit. That means each of us will be working alone today.

I can say that it is not easy to control the kids when each of us are doing the treatment in our own. Luckily for me, I have one of the supervisor in the camp, Miss Aminah who helped me alot to manage the rest of my patient during my treatment. Everything go so smooth from applying the Fluoride gel, writting the bundle of dietary sheets, and giving oral hygiene instruction to my patients. Alhamdulillah.

I have withnessed and experiened such a touching scene infront of the clinic. As we are distributing some food and drinks to our patient, then suddenly a bunch of Syrian kids aggressively run toward us.

They surround us and hungrily ask for more food.

It is hard to say that we have nothing left to be given to the kids.

Even so, I have tried to distract them with a photo session at the car park. I can cry a river you know if I stand still seeing the kid asking for more food while we have none.

Regretably speaking, I should have buy more food so that each of them at least get one today.

They seems so fine and happy yet who knows...

Kids Everywhere

I am supposed to attend Oral Diagnosis Clinic, yet finishing requirements from Paediatric department is seem more compelling. Since tomorrow is my last Clinic with the kids, I am forcing myself to finish at least two of long requirements along with my partner, Dr Anas today and continue the rest tomorrow.

The total mandate in this semester is six patient; between the age of six to thirteen. By far, I have only gotten one patient while my partner has done the second. Regrettably, the patient that I have found yesterday has not yet called to comfirm his presence today.

One hour before the clinic starts, my partner and I try searching for Paeds patients in the neighbourhood so that each of us will be completing two long cases today.

As we go door-to-door, by chance I have knocked one door with really approachable household. We ask the parent for permission to bring their children to the clinic, without hesitant the parent frankly give us their consent. At that time, I am so thankful and speechless because I know it is not easy for parent to let their children to strangers. All chat has done by my partner and I have done once or twice converse in between.

Moreover, it is advantageous for the patient as we will be going to apply topical fluoride gel for free.
Fluoride helps teeth to prevent tooth from decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and suger in mouth. It must be only be place topically and children need to be aware not to swallow the Fluoride during the treatment as excessive Fluoride in body is hazardous.

Alhamdulillah, I am so grateful, Allah has always given me help in unconditionally and unnoticeably way. Well, tommorow is our last Paediatric Clinic to finish all the requirements! So wish us luck to complete all cases in time.

Finals Is Over!

Final exam is not yet over, but 2015 is about to end in 2 weeks.

I have left only one paper until the end of semester.

Then, what? 

I am going home, baby!

Yeah! I have gotten myself a flight pass; which I bought couple weeks ago.

This will be my second time travel with Emirates. I chose Emirates this time because they do offer absolute low price for students even on the holiday season. They really know how to attract their patron. But for a student like me, it is certainly an advantage to go travel.

I dicided to spend my holiday in hometown right after the university announced the exact date for the long winter break. Plus, the winter here is freeze to death. 

On the other hand, some students plan to travel European country, Asian country, and Balkans to occupy their time yet some still plan to just stay in Irbid. I have stayed one time in Irbid during a month break, and it was an unproductive and indeed lifeless each day. Haha. 

Farewell JUST Dental Clinic!

Apart from that, I have listed some activities and stuff I want to do in Malaysia. Most of them are food hunting! Haha.

As you all know, Malaysia is well known with their food variety.

You must not be surprised that, within a month and a week, I can gain plus minus 5 kgs or even more. Haha. I hope not. 

Form my previous experiences, I must say it is a'di (normal) for abroad students to gain some weights after returning from their hometown. 

So, to deal with the weight issues, I have also made some plan to compensate them. Haha.

Wish me luck with my unknown result once I return back to Jordan.

Voluntary Mission Trip

Too eventful to forget. It will be a part of my living experience that I can never erase.

Academic & Intellectual Festival (iFEST) is conducted by Malaysian student associate in Amman. The same event has been held annually but this year they wanted to have a small booth to do regular medical check-up. The aim is to promote awareness among Amman student regarding oral health and their body systems function.

Since there has no student who is actually has been in clinical year there, Malaysian dental and medical team from Just University, Irbid have been called to conduct a mini clinic in Sweileh, Amman.

At 10 a.m. we depart from Irbid and it takes about 2 hours to reach Amman. We perform prayer in Masjid Abdul Rahman Bin Auf. I can admit, the biah (environment) there is quite controlled to be compare the biah in Irbid. From what I can see, majority students there still limit their contact; eye, talk and etc between different sexes. I honestly admire people who stand strong with the concept of limiting ikhtilat (intermingling men & women).

We are warmly welcomed by the students there. The programme is well in charged and everyone is willingly to take responsible to make it the best. The booth has been sectioned into several mini station including dental check-up, BMI consultation, blood test, and etc.

Enough to open a clinic with a small table, and 4 plastic chairs. Haha.

It is really worth full tiring day because everyone has given the best to spread "a healty life style" to the community. As for my dental team, I can say that everyone get a massive hands on experience.
I really hope we can join more voluntary mission in future. At the same time we can develop more of our clinical skills and contibute something to the society.

We start pack our things at 4.30 p.m. and then return to Irbid at 6.00 p.m. Alhamdulillah for such great experience I had. May Allah eases all of us and makes us competent doctor & dentist, Insya Allah.

Hectic Week

By far, second week of December is the bussiest yet pro-active week in year 2015, I can say.

I almost drown in the middle of 'everyday' mid-term examination, tons of lecture notes, continuous clinical assessment, seminars, daily lecture and zero degree winter.

But I know, of all the complaints, I still need to deal with them eventually. What matter the most is to start act, prioritize study rather than doing craps, and pray more.

New Spirit

Although my manly face, I still have this inferiority when facing up criticism. It is not easy to handle the emotion when someone tries to bring up your mistakes. 
For the past 3 days, I have attended some seminars and talk with profesionals regarding career pathway in Malaysia.

Yet, criticism is what makes us more mature. 

A sentence that gave me a spark into reallity given by Dr Firdaus Hariri himself.

"Don't take too long to recover and other people don't care much about you."

It sounds simple yet really gives me a deep thought. 

Yes, clinical student do face hard times, abundant of requirements and many critical advises from supervisors. Those emosional scene can be manage if you know your core bussiness in dental school. Your goal is to learn as much as possible, practise, and contibute to society in future.

Plus, people don't really care about you eventually. So, why you need to over-think of your little mistakes? learn and try not to repeat those mistakes.

Today, my friend and I had another personal talk session with Dr Dzulkarnain; Dental Officer in Cahaya Suria Dental Clinic.

Thank you to all the panelist. They really inspires me to be humble, act generous, and spread more kindness in future. 

Everyone is da'ie (one who engage dakwah). Most da'ie contact their mad'u (one who is invited).

But, doctors and dentists are different and really close to dakwah because the patient (mad'u) is the one who seek/meet the doctors/dentists.

First Post-Insertion

Alhamdulillah, today is the day to deliver my completed full denture to Hajj Mustafa Yousef.
He lives in Jerash, yet really commited in each appoinment. Up until today, he come 15 minutes early. Maybe because of the delivery day or he just punctual. Haha.

I remember that one day, he came with no appoinment because of some misunderstanding message from the clinic. I apologized and explained that he had no appoinment on that day. Hajj was very calm and with no argument he came back home. I was very dissappoint myself because did not remind him a day before. From that day onward, I have called every patient for confirmation a day before any appointment.

Upper & Lower Complete Denture

After all, I am so grateful and blessed that on the delivery day, not much adjustment need to be done on the denture.
Therefore, I want to dedicate milion thanks to Hajj, my partner, Mr Abu Uthaibah; for finding me such humble patient, Ustaz Mahadi; lab technician who made the denture in time, Doctors Ahmad; assist each step I done, and everyone who contribute their hand in making this complete denture so easy. I cannot thank more. May Allah grant you guys Jannah.

Indeed, giving someone a hope to smile, eating, and proper talking, give you a pleasant feeling.
I'm looking foward to make somebody else smile again! *wink*

Shoe Hunting

The truth is I have gained weight a lot since return back to Jordan. So I have planned to lose some weight before the upcoming holiday. 

To do so, I must have running shoe so that I could excercise outdoor. I had left my running shoe at home in Malaysia during the last season break.

Today, I went to Baladiah Irbid (City of Irbid) to browse some musta'mal (used) shoe. I did not remember that today was Jordan public holiday and the street was flooded by human. 

The hallway does not seem bussy, but I swear each stall was fulled by people. Everyone was so eager grabbing used item that had been offered with really low price. If you passion enough, you could find nice and new-looked stuff there. 

You must be surprised to find a Zara, GAP, H&M, Nike, Dr Marten and more branded item in the street market.

Well, I did found myself a leather shoe that cost only 5Jd. I guess I could wear it as much as I want. Even for running. Worth every cent. I hope. Haha.

After return back home, I planned to go jog after Asar but unfortunately there was a sudden rain and mud everywhere. So, I have to cancelled my plan and stay home studying.

Clinical Group 5

How is your day in dental clinic?

Who surronds you?

Basically, as a dental students, you must be paired up working in the clinic.

One act as the operator, and the other as assistant.

As much exhausted as being an operator for one clinic, being an assistant for that clinic was collapsing. People said that, doing nothing is more tiring than doing something and being an assistant literrally looking/starring at patients 24/7 while holding suction hose. Haha.

Emotional scenes with the workers in dispensary were our daily routine, plus sometimes the Dorctor who assist us doing treadment on that day, give us more headache with the unsatisfactory marks.

Up until now, I am still trying to catch things up with the situation, timing for each treatment and in dealing with different kind of patients. Addition to the examination for the whole December, adapting to the hectic life as dental student surely tough.

Apart from that, I am still grateful and so blessed to be surrounded by people who are kind and really helpful.

I could say that, my life are going to be thounsand times more miserable without my groupmates. *hug*

My First Real Pt

I did my final visit of Root Canal Treatment (RCT) almost one week ago but the experience i had is still vivid like it was performed yesterday.

Consider that was my very first treatment on real patient, the time management was not that good. But i believe that through mistakes i can be better. Not that i am encouraging the "wall" to make mistakes, yet minimise it by any chance.

I would like to share my story doing tretment in clinic with my patient in future.

But for now, let me intoduce my first patient, his name is Yazan. At glance i saw him as troublemaker, but through each visit, i saw his passion getting his teeth done. He was very cooperative and punctual at each visit. I was blessed to have him as my first real patient. 

Thanks to him that the RCT was done and considerably great. 

I did root canal treatment on upper right premolar with 2 canals and finished with disto-occlusal composite restoration.

Assalamualaikum,

Since this is my very first blog post, I want to be clear with what kind of post

 I am going to write in future.

The post will be some sort of life experience living far from home, ups and downs, dental related story as I'm dental student, and perhaps some review what I think beneficial to be shared with you.

Well, let me introduce myself.

My name is Mohamad Shahrin Bin Shahrul Zaman and I'm 20 years old student. 

People who close to me would call me Ise.

I came from Shah Alam, Malaysia but now living in Irbid , Jordan.

I'm now in my 4th year of Dental School, Jordan University Science & Technology (JUST).

Nothing is more special about me than my smile and teeth. *wink*

I have been drugged by rumors that my alma meter is the best amongst middle east.

Well, i could live with that.

Clinical year surely tougher with the class during morning and continue with the clinic at evening.

But, I need to adapt to the new style of living as the time management for clinical student is almost the same as the working time in my career.
